UK FACING 'TURNING POINT' IN BATTLE AGAINST POVERTY
THE JOSEPH ROWNTREE FOUNDATION FOUND CHILD AND PENSIONER POVERTY HAD ITS FIRST SUSTAINED RISE IN 20 YEARS
A national charity is warning Britain is facing a 'turning point' in the battle against poverty.
The Joseph Rowntree Foundation warns living costs are undoing work to tackle it.
Their annual State of the Nation report found the number of children and pensioners living in poverty had increased consistently for the first time in 20 years.
Childhood poverty rose by 400,000 while the number of elderly people in financial difficulty increased by 300,000.
The charity says increases in housing costs, rises in food and energy bills and cuts to benefits are all to blame.
