Social housing commission launched in the wake of the Grenfell fire
The housing charity Shelter has launched a commission into the future of social housing following the devastating fire at Grenfell tower.
The commission will examine the safety of housing, as well as the obstacles social tenants face when raising issues with councils and housing providers.
The commission will include a public consultation, a series of roadshows and a piece of research which will be presented to Jeremy Corbyn and Theresa May.
Commission members include former Labour leader Ed Miliband, mother of Stephen Lawrence Doreen Lawrence, Sayeeda Warsi, and Grenfell Tower survivor Edward Daffam.
A spokesperson for Shelter said: "In the wake of the Grenfell Tower tragedy, many social housing tenants say they feel ignored – and this isn't unique to Grenfell. Across the country, many communities and tenants don't feel their views count – and that often, they're treated as second-class citizens.
But we're ready to listen. To tenants, people on waiting lists, and the wider community. We want as many voices as possible to be heard. And we want a bold plan for change, which we'll deliver directly to Prime Minster Theresa May, and Labour's Jeremy Corbyn."
