Shorter working week could help solve inequality and stagnating productivity

A report has found that a shorter working week could boost the UK economy.

The think tank Autominy has published a report looking at how a shorter working week can help to tackle some of the issues affecting work in the UK, including stagnating productivity growth, the threat of automation, substantial inequality, gendered inequalities, job polarisation and precarious forms of work.

The report says that a transition to a shorter working week would be beneficial to both businesses and workers, as well as society as a whole, while there are also strong indications that it could help reduce air pollution and overall carbon footprint.

The report also finds that there is no positive correlation between productivity and the number of hours worked per day, suggesting that reducing hours would not necessarily hinder productivity, which would also mean that wages would not need to be cut alongside a reduction in hours, as productivity would be maintained.
