Police search concludes after Manchester knife attack

Police have now concluded the search at the address in Manchester that was being carried out following the Victoria Train Station attack on New Year’s Eve.

The 25-year-old man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and detained last night (1 January 2019) under the Mental Health Act is now in a secure medical facility.

The investigation has moved at a very fast pace and detectives are increasingly confident that the man acted alone in the final stages of the attack. The investigation will continue and will examine if anybody may have encouraged or assisted the man to commit the attack.

In the coming months whilst the man is detained and being assessed under the Mental Health Act, the investigation will carry on as usual searching for evidence and investigators will be consulting with medical specialists and the Crown Prosecution Service in relation to any potential criminal prosecution.

Specialist detectives continue to support the couple who were injured in this incident. The man has made some good progress and is expected to be released in the next day or so. His partner is also making progress but is expected to be in hospital for longer.

If anyone has witnessed the incident or knows anything that may assist the investigation they can contact us on 0161 856 3400. Anyone with footage is asked to send it to
