The Frenchman averaged 4 laps of the circuit at almost 230mph
Simon Pagenaud will start today's Indy 500 from Pole Position, joined on the front row by Ed Carpenter and Spencer Pigot.
The race will be the 103st running of the blue riband event from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, known as the Brickyard.
Thunderstorms may affect the running of the race which runs over 200 laps of the 2.5 mile oval.
Last year's winner Will Power will start in 6th position, in a race that sees seven former winners take to the track to reclaim the Borg-Warner Trophy.
