New Years Honours 2024 announced

The list for 2024 includes many from the world of entertainment, sport and business.

The King has made the Archbishop of Canterbury a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (RVO) in recognition of his prominent role in the coronation.

Justin Welby anointed and crowned Charles during the ceremony on May 6 at Westminster Abbey, as the world watched the King fulfil his destiny.

 

Meanwhile, Dame Shirley Bassey says she’s “truly humbled” to be made a Companion of Honour in the New Year Honours list.

The Welsh singer, 86, is recognised for her services to music this year after previously becoming a dame in the 1999 honours list.

 

Elsewhere in showbiz, Great British Bake Off judge Paul Hollywood, whose handshake is a highly coveted honour on the show, has been made an MBE.

Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke has been made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) alongside her mother Jenny as co-founders of SameYou, a brain injury recovery charity they established after she survived two brain haemorrhages.

Her co-star Oliver Ford Davies says he’s “honoured” to be made an OBE.

Also, Belfast Oscar-winning actor James Martin says he “cried his eyes out” after learning he was to be made an MBE in the New Year Honours List.

 

Former Cabinet minister Sajid Javid has been knighted.

Mr Javid, who is standing down at the next general election, had an extensive career in Government serving in six cabinet roles, and becoming the first British Asian to hold one of the great offices of state.

 

In sport, the extraordinary charity work of Kevin Sinfield and Rob Burrow has been recognised in the New Year Honours List alongside three of England’s Women’s World Cup football stars.

Sinfield and Burrow, who were Leeds Rhinos team-mates during trophy-laden rugby league careers, have received CBEs for services to motor neurone disease awareness.

Millie Bright, Mary Earps and Lauren Hemp have also been honoured for their part in helping the Lionesses reach the World Cup final in the summer.

 

Author Kate Mosse has said she sees her CBE as a recognition of the importance of The Women’s Prize for Fiction, of which she is a co-founder, as she was named in the New Year Honours.

 

Glastonbury Festival founder Sir Michael, listed under his full name Athelstan Joseph Michael Eavis, said he was looking forward to his investiture after being knighted for services to music and charity.

 

Outspoken Wetherspoon founder and boss Tim Martin has been knighted.

The businessman, who was a vocal Brexit supporter during the 2016 referendum campaign, has been recognised for his services to hospitality and culture.

 

Author Jilly Cooper said she is “incredibly bowled over” after being given a damehood in the New Year Honours list.

The 86-year-old author and journalist of steamy fiction was honoured for services to literature and to charity.

 

Other highlights include 79-year-old Elizabeth Craig Ovens, who has spent more than six decades as a butcher has been made an MBE, Mary Margaret Rose Risher receives a BEM for her services to Child Road Safety in Harrogate and Robin Mercer will be getting a BEM for services to business and the economy. Robin is the owner of a popular chain of garden centres in Northern Ireland.
