Man jailed after being caught upskirting at British Museum by off-duty officer
A man who was caught upskirting a woman by an off-duty police officer at the British Museum has been jailed for four months, the Metropolitan Police said.
Colombian national Jake Verano Gomez, 33, of no fixed abode, was detained by the female City of London officer on August 19 after she spotted him taking a video of his victim without her being aware.
A string of similar videos of other potential victims, believed to have been filmed that same day, were also found on Gomez’s phone.
The Met has called for those who were at the British Museum at about 2pm on August 19 to come forward if they believe they were also a victim.
Gomez was sentenced to four months imprisonment at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, having pleaded guilty to recording an image under clothing to observe another without consent, Scotland Yard said.
He was also made to pay court fees and will have to register with the police in accordance with the Sexual Offences Act 2003 for up to seven years.
Detective Constable Holly Wright said: “These kinds of offences have a devastating impact on women and girls who should be free to go about their lives without fear of being the victim of such a horrendous crime.
“Fortunately the presence of our colleague from City of London Police has meant Gomez has now been brought to justice.”
