Major incident declared as fire rips through Saddleworth Moor
Greater Manchester Police have declared a major incident as firefighters continue to battle a huge blaze on Saddleworth Moor.
A total of 34 homes in Carrbrook, were evacuated overnight due to their proximity to the fire. There were no reported injured and everyone was accounted for.
Firefighters have worked through the night to keep the flames at bay and at first light this morning, offensive firefighting on the moors has recommenced.
Throughout yesterday nine fire engines and two Wildfire Units were in attendance, with support from various partner agencies including Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service.
Crews also used a helicopter over the area which dropped water onto the fire. At one stage the fire measured 6km.
Public Health England said: “Smoke is an irritant and can make eyes and throats sore - wash your face with soap and water and keep hydrated by drinking water. If you have any health concerns contact the NHS 111 service.”
Tameside Council last night announced a number of school closures as follows: Mossley Hollins High School and Buckton Vale Primary School will be closed today (Wednesday 27 June 2018) due to the ongoing fire on the moors above Stalybridge and Mossley. Both schools have communicated the closures directly to parents and carers.
