Large rise in Under-25s with type two diabetes
The number of children and young people being treated for Type 2 diabetes, traditionally only seen in adults and linked to obesity, has risen by around 40%.
That's in the last four years, according to research by the Local Government Association.
The number of cases, 715 in under-25s, shows the 'critical need' to urgently fix the childhood obesity crisis, the LGA says.
It also warns that the record of cases, from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, only relate to those treated in paediatric practice, not primary care, and so the true number of young people with Type 2 diabetes could be even higher.
