Fairer access to the cheapest rail fares could soon be available
The Rail Delivery group and Transport Focus want the ticket system to be easier and simpler to use.
There are currently over 55 million different tariffs available which campaigners say makes it complicated for rail passengers to access the best fares.
Transport Focus pledge to pressure rail companies into creating a system we can trust.
Their aim, along with The Rail Delivery group, is to make ticketing systems easier and fairer to use.
The current fare layout is due to out of date legislation from the 1990's.
In a statement on the Independent watchdog's website, Transport Focus' Chief executive Anthony Smith said:
“Rail passengers want a rail fares system they can trust, that is simpler, offers better value for money and is more understandable. Fares and ticketing systems need to suit the way we travel now – there is a huge demand for smarter ticketing. Opening the debate on reform options is overdue. The ability to buy cheaper tickets for legs of a journey, so called split ticketing, is fast eroding trust in advertised fares."
