Death toll from New Zealand volcano rises
The death toll from a volcanic eruption in New Zealand has risen to 20.
Police said the latest victim, Paul Browitt, died in a Melbourne hospital on Sunday after the blast on White Island on December 9.
Mr Browitt was on the island with his two daughters: 23-year-old Stephanie, who remains at the Alfred Hospital, and 21-year-old Krystal whose body was recovered in the days following the eruption.
Mr Browitt's wife Maria had remained on a ship while her family took a day trip to the island.
At least five of the 23 victims being treated in hospitals in Australia and New Zealand are in a critical condition, authorities said.
White Island, also known by its Maori name, Whakaari, is the tip of an undersea volcano about 30 miles off New Zealand's North Island and was a popular tourist destination.
Many of those killed and injured were from the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Ovation of the Seas.
New Zealand authorities are investigating the circumstances around the disaster.
