Call for calorie tax
Charities Action on Sugar and Action on Salt call for a calorie levy on processed foods with excessive calories.
Similar to the Soft Drinks Industry Levy 'Sugar Tax', the action groups are calling on the Government to force manufacturers to pay a levy if they do not reduce excessive calories, and criticise the Department of Health and Social Care for not focusing enough on fat intake reduction policies.
The groups similarly call out Public Health England's Sugar Reduction Programme and Calorie Reduction Programme, stating that having two separate programmes is 'illogical'. Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced during his campaign that he would investigate scrapping the 'Sugar Tax', calling it a 'sin tax'.
