The Sentencing Council publishes definitive guidelines, aimed at extending the law to cover attacks that happen on private property and attacks on assistance dogs, as well as significantly increasing the maximum sentence levels for offenders.

People who are already disqualified from owning a dog will also face the toughest penalties.

The guidelines will come into force in courts in England and Wales from July.
