Large number of fathers don't qualify for paternity leave

A quarter of new fathers did not qualify for paternity leave or pay in 2016, according to a report by the Trades Union Congress.

The study showed that around 157,000 new fathers were unable to claim their two weeks' statutory paternity leave with pay.

113,000 did not claim because they were self-employed and, unlike self-employed mothers, are not eligible for paternity allowance.

A further 44,000 were unable to claim because they had been with their current employers for less than six months.
